AUCC survey reveals increases in most aspects of internationalizing higher education, but more support needed to ensure competitiveness in today’s global knowledge economy

OTTAWA (September 13, 2007) — Canadian universities responded to student demands by expanding the international focus of degree programs over the past six years, but a lack of financial support for internationalization and a coordinated federal strategy continue to be the main obstacles to success, according to a survey released today by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. For full release, contace Jeff Pappone.

Please consider giving to the Kibrik Bergelson Study in Russia Scholarship http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/scholarships/kibrik_study_in_russia.cfm this year through the UAA Family Campaign.  The Chancellor's office will match your contributions up to a certain point, so it's a great way to get the most opportunity for our students through our personal contributions. The scholarship was created by Jim Bowers, a local engineer, who had a wonderful time visiting Russian colleagues in Moscow.  He wants to share the same opportunity with UAA students.  Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.  This year Chris Helkenn, a Business and Russian major, received a scholarship through this fund. Chris is studying at Moscow State University. Again, please consider donating to the scholarship to help UAA students get to Russia for study abroad.

Please see briefing by Greg Wolfe, Director of the World Trade Center - Alaska,  on the role of International Trade in Alaska’s economy. I think it helps makes a strong case that International education is becoming a workforce issue.  Alaska needs a growing number of fishermen, businessmen, engineers and hospitality industry managers and employees who can adapt to the cultural diversity of their growing international markets and customers.

Dear Colleagues:
As we did last year I have attached a listing of possible international grant opportunities. I have attempted to cluster international opportunities with the appropriate College or School to make this easier to use. Many grants offer opportunities to multiple UAA organizations. The American Russian Center is prepared to assist any UAA faculty in developing international proposals from this list or from any other sources. I would appreciate if you could disseminate this to as many faculty as possible. Thank you.
